An Introduction to Valerie!

What is it?

Valerie is a 2D platformer adventure game for Windows inspired by the likes of Cave Story and Celeste.

It follows the story of our protagonist, Valerie:

Having crash-landed a plane on a snowy mountainside, Valerie is rescued by two children whose dad has gone missing. Despite being stranded herself, she becomes wrapped up in their circumstances and sets out to help them while uncovering the mysterious situation. Companionship, danger and magic awaits!

Abilities

Valerie has magic abilities that go well with her agile nature.

The bubblegun ability allows her to trap objects in a bubble, sealing away threats while providing a trampoline-like surface for her to bounce from. Jumping on the bubble at the right angle is important to soar in the right direction!

And the boost ability lets her dash swiftly in any direction through the air, reaching higher and further places. This can also be used to help with running up walls.

Using these abilities skillfully together is key to traversing the landscape and solving puzzles.

What’s next?

The game is currently a good way into development, with around 3 hours of story content and 30 ‘areas’ to explore. It’s difficult to say exactly how much is left, but all of the core mechanics are complete and the major points are planned out.

I’d also like to add a challenge mode, where the player can re-visit old areas or unlockable bonus levels.

As for this blog, I expect to be posting about:

  • Progress updates

  • Game features (like this)

  • Technical explanations

  • Ramblings on game dev related topics

Thanks for taking your time to read! If this post was interesting to you, please check out the free demo of Valerie, the game I'm working on right now.
